The Falcone Legacy
While today’s Falcone (pronounced Fal-cone'-ee) pianos are but a stenciled name behind their revered Boston history — established by Santi Falcone in 1985 and handmade in his Haverhill, Massachusetts piano works until 1994 — original Falcone pianos were in the same performance and price class of other top echelon American grand pianos, e.g., Mason & Hamlin, Steinway & Sons, and Baldwin.
In fact, Falcone was purchased by Bernard Greer of Mason & Hamlin in 1989 to become part of Mason & Hamlin Companies. Two former presidents of Steinway & Sons, Peter Perez and Lloyd Meyer, headed up Mason & Hamlin from the mid-1970s up to Greer’s sale of Mason & Hamlin in 1996 to Kirk and Gary Burgett. In order to focus solely on making its flagship Mason & Hamlin pianos, the Burgett brothers sold the Falcone name and design to America Sejung Corp.
HIGH QUALITY AT LOW PRICES
Falcone no longer has any affiliation with Mason & Hamlin, nor does it claim to be in the Mason & Hamlin, Steinway, or Baldwin “class.” But Falcone’s new owners at America Sejung Corp. are targeting a different market segment: customers who want a much lower cost grand piano, but still assembled by hand. With Asian manufacturing know how and production management experience…combined with hand craftsmanship, possible only because of much lower labor costs…Falcone grand pianos more than meet competition in a growing market segment of low-priced grand pianos.
THE FALCONE COAT OF ARMS
The Falcone crest has been the standard bearer of an inspiring, handmade, expensive American piano. Today it represents a combination of Chinese hands-on detail and production know-how that offers an amazing value for its price: “Purity and sweetness of tone, evenness of scale, great durability, superb case design in the richest of woods, and high commercial value .” America Sejung Corp. strives to uphold these essential qualities associated with Santi Falcone.
Falcone grands perform beyond expectations when compared to other modestly-priced production-made Asian pianos — such as the Chinese-built Essex, sold through Steinway dealers; or Hamilton, built in China and sold through Baldwin dealers.
